‘time to remember’ on Sunday 1st May

‘time to remember’ : an event to make the first ever 2 minutes silence. With many thanks to farnham maltings.

Start: Sunday 01 May – 10:30

Estimated End: Sunday 01 May – 16:00

Locations: Farnham Maltings, Castle Street & Gostrey Meadow, Farnham

The world’s first two minute silence took place in Farnham in 1916. On Sunday 1 May 2016, Farnham will pause again to remember this historic event.

In the original event, in what was to become a mid-point of the First World War, Mr J. Alfred Eggar said “This is spring time, and it is our national way of speaking of hope”. We are continuing these themes of both remembrance and renewal a century later.

Timetable of Events:

10.30am – Remembrance

10.50am – The procession will congregate at the bottom of Castle Street for a short ceremony and two minute silence. There will be a special performance of music commissioned for this event, performed by PWRR Band and local muscians including Full Circle Vocal Group and pupils from Weydon School.

11.10am – Renewal  Follow the band and process to Gostrey Meadow via Downing Street.

11.20am – 4.00pm – May Day Fair

Following the ceremony on Castle Street, there will be a May Day Fair which will include Horton’s Steam Fairground, music at the bandstand, special displays (including Museum of Farnham’s current exhibition about the two minute silence) a WWI re-enactment, and many more activities for all the family! We invite you to come and bring a picnic! The fair is free entry. Please note that some activities may be ticketed on the day but will be provided free of charge.
